Tosin Adarabioyo insists winning the Champions League is a realistic target for Chelsea despite losing to Bayern Munich.
The Blues were beaten 3-1 in their opening match of the competition thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and an own goal from Trevoh Chalobah. Cole Palmer scored the only goal for Chelsea.
Chelsea’s squad is the youngest in the Premier League so far this season with an average age of just over 23.
The young blues won two trophies last season in the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup.
Now Adarabioyo believes the team is capable of winning even more significant silverware. He said: “Age has got absolutely nothing to do with it. You saw what we did in the Club World Cup to become world champions,” he said.
“We have full belief that we’re fully capable to achieve a lot in this competition too. Whenever we’re playing, whenever we’re fighting for anything, we go all the way. We always try to fight for the highest and that is winning the Champions League.”
Bayern Munich have won the Champions League six times in their history, most recently in 2020, and the Chelsea defender recognised how good a side they are.
“They’ve achieved great things in their league and throughout the Champions League,” he added. “In the past few seasons they’ve reached quarter-finals, semi-finals back-to-back. They’re a very good side.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca believes Munich’s Jonathan Tah should have been sent off for an off the ball challenge on Joao Pedro. The German appeared to swing his arm at the Brazilian leaving him on the floor.
The Bayern defender received a yellow card for his actions but the Chelsea boss believed it should have been more. “For me it’s a clear red card. When there is not an intention to go for the go for the ball, just to kick the player, why is it not a red card?” he said in his post match press conference.
Adarabioyo was much less certain than his manager and commented: “It was a big moment in the game. We saw the incident but I feel like it could go either way; the ref could give it, or he could not give it and this time he decided not to.”
