Leeds United Women fell to defeat against a strong, tier 3 West Bromwich Albion Women side on Sunday afternoon, after a valiant first half display from Simon Wood's side, going in level at the break on top of chances.

It was a bright start for the Whites at a freezing cold Garforth, with Leeds sending an immediate message of intent early on, as Kath Smith split the opposition defence with a through ball to Drew Greene, whose cross was intercepted neatly by Charlotte Clark in the West Brom goal.

United would go again shortly after, coming so close to breaking the deadlock. A cleverly choreographed move between Darcie Greene and Chloe Dixon on the left flank, dissected its way beyond the Baggies back line. With Drew Greene floating in a welcoming cross to an onrushing Drew Greene, which just evaded the wingers head to nod in from short distance.

Leeds enjoyed spells of possession and remained comfortable on the ball, whilst having the share of opportunities between the two sides, completely limiting West Brom to very little as the quarter hour mark approached.

The remainder of the first 45 was an evident battle between midfields. Scrapping away in the middle of the park in an attempt to conjure up a strong chance which was yet to occur in the tricky conditions.

As the away side settled into the game, two successive chances fell for the Baggies. Rhianne Oakley struck low towards an unalarmed Carrie Simpson who denied the effort with no trouble, before a minute later Oakley's attempt was well blocked by captain Shauna Legge as West Brom warned their quality as the game approached the half time interval.

Referee Abigail Greenwood blew up for half time as the teams went in all square. With Simon Woods’ side showing promise and threat going forward against a well drilled West Brom side.

A significant shift in momentum came after the break, as the Baggies showed their attacking prowess. Although Leeds had all the answers, mitigating any signs of danger through skipper Legge who was dominating her individual battles at the back.

Whites shot stopper Carrie Simpson was called upon for the first time in the afternoon shortly after. Denying Olivia Rabjohn’s curled effort which looked sure to nestle in the back of the net until the acrobatic number one pulled off a stunning stop to keep proceedings level.

Opportunities were rare and sparse for either side, as both teams matched each other in the tie with 20 minutes to play.

That was until the Baggies found a breakthrough. Oakley fired home for the away side with a tidy finish to put them ahead.

West Brom would build on this and strike again two minutes later, with Ellie May doubling the deficit, ultimately creating something out of nothing and conjuring up some breathing space.

The setback wouldn’t deter the Whites from showing their strength, as Legge propped up with another fine piece of defending, blocking an effort off the line to keep the hosts in the tie with a glimmer of hope for a comeback.

It wasn’t to be, as Mia Sorrentino wrapped it up for West Brom, converting in stoppage time to extend the lead to three.
