The Argentine Football Association ratified a nationwide football strike on Tuesday, so no matches will be played this weekend across all divisions. The federation confirmed the decision after an Executive Committee meeting in Ezeiza.
Club directors in the Liga Profesional had already voted on 23 February at the Lionel Andrés Messi complex to stop play from five to eight March in support of AFA, following ARCA’s tax-evasion complaints. Lower divisions later joined the action.
The ratification came hours after Judge Diego Amarante of Economic Criminal Court five rejected a request by lawyers for Claudio Tapia, Cristian Malaspina and Gustavo Lorenzo to delay scheduled depositions.
Headline fixtures in round nine hit by the stoppage include Vélez-Newell’s, Rosario Central-Tigre, San Lorenzo-Independiente, Racing-Huracán, Central Córdoba-Boca Juniors and River Plate-Atlético Tucumán.
After reviewing the calendar, the suspended Primera División games will be played on Saturday two and Sunday three May. Scheduling will take into account clubs involved in international competitions.
The case that triggered the strike began on 12 December, with ARCA alleging AFA withheld third-party taxes and missed the 30-day deposit window in 69 instances between March 2024 and September 2025. Prosecutors say the association was not in financial distress and ran a financial churn using funds tied to social security for 1,225 employees and tax withholdings.
