Following Canada’s World Cup exit, Alphonso Davies has spoken out publicly for the first time. The FC Bayern left back responded to criticism from many fans and explained why he didn’t play against Morocco.
For Alphonso Davies, the World Cup ended in major disappointment. Canada lost the Round of 16 match against Morocco 0–3, thereby being eliminated from the tournament as co-hosts. The knockout match was particularly bitter for the Bayern pro: He sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes.
Many Canadian fans reacted with confusion. On social media, some even accused Davies of prioritizing FC Bayern over the national team and of not wanting to take any risks for his home country.
Canada’s national team coach, Jesse Marsch, explained after the match that Davies had initially been on the right track. “Until two days ago, his recovery was going exactly according to plan, but then he felt a slight twinge,” Marsch said, explaining why he left his captain out of the lineup.
Davies himself also described his situation afterward: “I tried to see how it would go—maybe I could have come on, but a thigh injury like that doesn’t just disappear as if by magic in 24 hours. I did my sprints and felt something with every step.”

Shortly afterward, the 25-year-old posted a detailed statement on Instagram, in which he also addressed the criticism. “Representing Canada on soccer’s biggest stage is something I will never take for granted. I’m proud to wear this crest and stand alongside a group of players who gave everything for our country,” Davies wrote.
He found it particularly difficult that he couldn’t help his team as he had hoped: “For me personally, this tournament was one of the biggest challenges of my career. After suffering a thigh injury, I wasn’t able to play at the level I’m capable of. It pains me that I couldn’t give my all when my team and my country needed it most.”
Despite the disappointment, Davies is looking ahead: “Still, I don’t believe in excuses. In soccer, there are many setbacks, and how you react to them is what defines you. This disappointment will only motivate me to get back in shape, work even harder, and come back stronger than ever.”
With an eye toward FC Bayern, these words should be encouraging. Following the unfortunate World Cup exit, Davies is now focusing on his full recovery and the start of the new season with Germany’s record-holding champions.
