Nayef Aguerd has set out his account of why a proposed switch to Real Sociedad collapsed, saying a clash with Pellegrino Matarazzo over his return timeline proved decisive. The player said in a statement that he wanted to follow a progressive plan after pubis surgery in March.
Matarazzo wanted him available from the first official match, against Betis next Friday, a stance the defender viewed as incompatible with that protocol.
Aguerd underlined that he passed a medical conducted by Real’s doctors, validated by both clubs, and he did not see any medical impediment to the transfer until his gradual programme was raised.
By then, Real Sociedad and Olympique de Marseille had agreed a loan with an option to buy, a move the centre-back had himself promoted. He had also spoken with the coach before formal talks, including about his recovery plan.
Aguerd stressed his full respect for the Gipuzkoan club and accepted the manager’s position. He described the decision as a responsible step to protect his body and give himself the best chance of completing the season.
