Javier Aguirre landed in Valencia and went straight from Manises to Paterna to lead his first training session. His stint is set to run until 30 June.

According to AS, the Mexican travelled overnight from Mexico City to Madrid before arriving early. His two assistants, Toni Amor and Pol Llorente, were already at the training ground. He takes charge immediately after studying the squad over the past 10 days, since Braulio Vázquez contacted his agent about replacing Corberán.

He said the club’s stature drew him in, recalling 15 years in Spain and visits to Mestalla, which he wants to be a fortress again. He praised the club, the fans and the players, joking that the press were not among the attractions.

Aguirre said there is plenty of work and league ahead, adding Valencia must start winning to avoid suffering. He believes there is strong individual quality and will try to maximise it. He also commended Óscar Sánchez, noting some games merited more and that recent performances under him were fantastic.

He returns to Spain 22 years after his first spell. Valencia is his seventh club in the country, and he has managed 466 top-flight matches.

In the coming days he will get to know the club, its facilities and the city. For now he has not spoken with the Lims. He said he does not know if this will be his last dance and will discuss it with Silvia, whom he calls the boss.
