Ryunosuke Sato has begun the international break on a low note, La Grada reports, with Harime Moriyasu leaving the Valencia CF player out for Japan’s first game against Uruguay.

The attacking midfielder had recently been rewarded with a senior call-up after standing out with Japan’s youth teams and Tokyo FC. Japan have more fixtures this window, so he could yet feature later on.

At club level he has had an uneven start at Valencia CF, showing flashes of his talent while still adapting to Spanish football. It also represents a step into one of the world’s most competitive leagues.

He had forced his way back into the national set-up after missing the final squad for the World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the United States last summer.

Already capped five times, he was a regular in the junior ranks and is considered one of Japan’s brightest prospects. The squad are now preparing for upcoming tournaments, including the Asian Cup in January, and Valencia could be without him for up to one month.
