Ajax and Birmingham City agree Akpom loan

According to Voetbal International’s Tim van Duijn, Birmingham City will sign Chuba Akpom on loan from Ajax with a permanent option if the club go up to the Premier League.

Akpom was acquired from Middlesbrough in 2023 for around 12 million euros, but never fully took off at Ajax. The striker was useful as a super-sub and found praise for his unwavering commitment. However, he is a high earner and was therefore at the top of the list to leave.

Although Ajax preferred to sell Akpom, that wasn’t feasible in the short term. By loaning him out, Ajax still saves a significant amount on wages. Birmingham City will also pay a loan fee. Last season, Akpom spent time on loan at Lille, where he scored three goals in 14 Ligue 1 games.

Akpom is already on his way to England to complete his transfer to Birmingham City – who were promoted to the Championship last season.
