The referees' committee has appointed Javier Alberola Rojas as the match referee for Valencia v Real Madrid at Mestalla, with Jorge Figueroa Vázquez on VAR. The fixture is one of this LaLiga round’s standout ties.
According to Superdeporte, Figueroa Vázquez’s selection has drawn attention after last season at the Santiago Bernabéu, when he advised on a review of a penalty, described as non-existent, given against César Tárrega for a foul on Kylian Mbappé. The on-field referee, Cuadra Fernández, upheld the decision and Real Madrid missed the spot-kick.
Alberola Rojas has overseen 16 Valencia matches in the top flight, yielding five wins, five draws and six defeats. Valencia have not won under him since a 0-1 victory at Rayo Vallecano in 2023.
This season with him in charge, Valencia lost 0-2 to Villarreal and drew 1-1 with Rayo.
Under Figueroa Vázquez, the record is similar from 11 games, four wins, four draws and three defeats. The most recent was a derby against Villarreal in 2024, which Valencia lost by a single goal.
