An eighth consecutive away defeat for Ryan Mason’s team means the “L” column has ticked over into double figures, the most defeats at this stage of a second tier season since 1995/96. That season was also the last time any Baggies team lost eight away league games in succession, although in that campaign, it corresponded with a run of 13 defeats in 14 league games both home and away. The last time that Albion lost nine of their first twelve away games in the second tier was in 1993/94 under Keith Burkinshaw.
It means that Albion will spend Christmas in 16th place in the table, the joint lowest position after 22 games this century with the fewest points at this stage of a second tier season since 1999/2000, a campaign that ultimately saw the dismissal of Brian Little (after 34 games) and the appointment of Gary Megson.
It’s not exactly a positive way to go into the festive season, but can I take this opportunity to wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and hopes for a great New Year!
