Alessio Romagnoli has signed for Al-Sadd, with Lazio to receive a modest fee of three million euros, according to Il Messaggero, Gianluca Di Marzio and La Lazio Siamo Noi.

He will undergo a medical in the coming days, with official confirmation expected afterwards. His salary is set at six million euros per year, and Al-Sadd pushed ahead with the move even though compatriot Roberto Mancini, who had first requested him, has since left.

A boyhood Lazio fan, Romagnoli realised a long-held ambition by joining on a free in 2022 after his AC Milan deal expired. He agreed to halve his wage to three million euros, having been promised an increase if Champions League football was secured, a promise that was not kept.

Relations with president Claudio Lotito and the hierarchy deteriorated over time. With only a year left on his deal, an exit became increasingly likely.

Al-Sadd’s pursuit dates back to January, when a switch fell through late on after Lotito asked the defender to forgo three months’ salary to sanction the move. Romagnoli refused on principle, and the Qatari champions later reignited their interest.
