Leeds United have confirmed goalkeeper Alex Cairns has signed a new two-year contract, keeping the 33-year-old at Elland Road until 2028. He remains part of Daniel Farke's senior squad.

The academy graduate made his first-team debut in the 2011/12 season, left in 2015 after a series of loans, and returned from Salford City in summer 2024 after playing every league game in the previous campaign. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk understands that Leeds could not guarantee Karl Darlow the number one role and plan to recruit another senior goalkeeper this summer.

Illan Meslier has joined Arsenal on a free after running down his Leeds contract. Darlow, who replaced Lucas Perri as first choice last season, is close to confirming a move to Manchester United. The Wales international is out of contract after three years and turned down the chance to stay.

Cairns has amassed over 300 career appearances and is a regular presence on first-team matchdays. He is also active with the Leeds United Foundation, promoting wellbeing and social activity.

He joins captain Ethan Ampadu in agreeing fresh terms this summer. Cairns, originally signed to provide experienced cover, continues in the role of third keeper under Farke.
