Alexis Mac Allister revealed Liverpool made him sad when they told him they were not in a position to offer him a new deal and said he had options to leave Anfield in the summer.

The Argentina midfielder, a £35m signing from Brighton in 2023, has entered the last two years of his current contract.

But whereas Liverpool spent over £200m on new signings Bradley Barcola, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz and gave his fellow midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai a new five-year deal, they informed Mac Allister there was no offer to him.

Mac Allister was a target for other clubs in the transfer window, including Wednesday’s opponents Atletico Madrid, and admitted he might have gone. “There was a chance,” he said.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad. I think I give 100 per cent for this football club every single day in training, games.

“Of course I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan [Gravenberch] renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad I didn’t get mine.

“Of course, there is still time, the fans don’t need to worry because I will give 100 per cent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I am in the right club and I have the right mindset to give my 100 per cent to the club.”

Liverpool did not give Mac Allister an explanation as to why there was no contract offer. He added: “There wasn’t any direct conversation with me, it was with my agent and I don’t want to say things that they never said but what I got from my agent was that they were not in the position to renew me. It’s really sad because we won the Premier League together, we went through difficult times as well together and I always give my best. We will see what happens but, of course, it makes me a little bit sad.”

The World Cup winner hopes he can earn a new deal, saying: “Maybe, it is going to depend on how I perform during these years, like every football player, and they are right to make the decision. The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100 per cent and maybe they change their minds.”

Mac Allister explained why he wanted to stay at Anfield and insisted he had never taken it for granted.

“Because this is the right club,” he added. “I love being here, this is something special. If. I love this club, love being here and love the fans and as a player it sometimes happens you are at a club for a long time and don’t realise where you are, but that doesn’t happen to me, I love being here.”
