TNT Sports Mexico reported on Monday that former France U21 forward Allan Saint-Maximin (28) could represent the Haiti national team at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The former Newcastle United and OGC Nice player quickly responded to the reports.

Saint-Maximin currently plays his club football for América in the Mexican top-flight. He moved there last summer, leaving Al-Ahli after last season’s loan spell at Turkish side Fenerbahce. So far this season, the winger has played 12 games, scoring three goals and registering two assists.

Saint-Maximin has represented France at youth level, but the AS Saint-Étienne academy product never featured for the senior side. Consequently, he is able to feature for another national side and he is eligible to play for Haiti, who have just secured their place in next summer’s World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite reports, he will play no part in the tournament, unless there is a highly unlikely call-up to the France squad. “I want to congratulate the Haitian people and the national team for their historic qualification. It is an important moment, and I am sincerely happy for Haiti. I can see that some people have drawn a connection, surely because I am Guadeloupean and Guyanese, but to be clear, there is no process and no intention concerning the Haiti national team,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

He added, “I have total respect for the players who earned their place in the World Cup. They have fought for their qualification, and it is important for them not to be associated to these rumours. All the best to them for the World Cup.”
