Ally McCoist discusses Rangers administration after clip gains traction among Celtic fans | OneFootball

Ally McCoist has addressed comparisons between Manchester City’s situation and his own experience at Rangers after comments from the former Ibrox boss were widely shared among Celtic supporters.

A clip of McCoist and Gabby Agbonlahor discussing the potential consequences facing City circulated heavily in Celtic circles this week, with Hoops fans highlighting McCoist’s role as Rangers manager when the club entered administration and was subsequently liquidated in 2012.

The former Rangers boss has now been asked directly about his experience and whether there are comparisons to be made with the potential consequences facing City.

Asked on talkSPORT about the Rangers situation, McCoist said: “Absolutely horrendous. Because, effectively, in the bigger picture, people were losing their jobs,

“You’re not talking about your centre-forward and your centre-back, because invariably, footballers will survive because they do. There’s a big difference.

“There’s no real comparison, other than that City might get put down the leagues. That’s potentially one of the punishments, and that brings its own problems.

“But when we went into administration and liquidation, they came in and just cleared the boards. So, therefore, I could tell you stories. When I was manager, I had one of the older lads in tears. Not a player, somebody who had a wee job at the club. An older fella, came in tears. Because he was losing his job.

“It was heartbreaking. As it happens, he didn’t lose his job. I was saying to the guys, ‘You need to get rid of a player’, because a player will survive. The player will go somewhere else, and a lot of them did.

“It’s a long time coming. The most important things are people’s livelihoods at the club. By that, I mean the staff around the place. The tea lady, the kit man… all that stuff comes into play.

“When you go down there, you’re effectively starting from scratch. Because the players won’t stay. They will not stay. We had a couple, particularly Lee Wallace, fantastic, and one or two others that stayed and it was absolutely brilliant.

“But if you’re talking about Manchester City… if that happened, you’re starting again. You’re officially starting again.”
