Sevilla trained with a trimmed group on Wednesday as Matías Almeyda’s first session for Saturday’s visit of Athletic was hit by absences. According to as.com, there were nine players missing.

The absentees were Alfon, Sow, Alexis Sánchez, Azpilicueta, Marcao, Vargas, Januzaj, Akor Adams, Ejuke and Nianzou.

Almeyda wants to take care of the newly arrived Ejuke and Akor Adams after their exertions, having played on Saturday against Egypt and on Monday against Elche.

By contrast, Alfon, Vargas and Azpilicueta are ruled out, and Marcao remains suspended, halfway through his ban with three matches still to serve.

It remains to be seen how serious Nianzou’s problems are, although common sense points towards not giving him any more minutes. The same caution applies to Januzaj, Sow and Alexis Sánchez.

Sevilla are working short-handed, effectively 10 out once Mendy’s suspension on Saturday is factored in. The picture is, at the very least, concerning.
