The chewing gum contract poker between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano has long since become a controversial topic both in sport and in the media – and now Dietmar Hamann has spoken out
The Sky pundit is harsh on those responsible at the German record champions and is particularly irritated by the way Munich conducted the negotiations. For Hamann, one thing is certain: FC Bayern did not cut a good figure in the Upamecano case
Hamann sees the club in an unusually passive role. „Bayern are co-drivers in the negotiations. They are being led through the ring by the nose by their advisors,“ explained the former international on Sky. He also referred to similar situations from the recent past, such as with Alphonso Davies or Leroy Sané. In his view, FC Bayern is threatened with a creeping loss of authority if such processes are repeatedly played out in public over a period of months
Hamann is particularly critical of the external impact. The tough poker has led to a section of the fans increasingly turning against Upamecano – an effect that he believes could have been avoided. „The club must be careful not to lose face completely,“ said the 52-year-old

Despite the harsh criticism of the Bayern bosses, Hamann makes one thing clear: he does not see the player as being to blame. „Upamecano has done nothing wrong. He has an offer from the club and the club has been letting it run for weeks and months. As long as the club does not set a deadline, he does not have to make a decision,“ emphasised the TV pundit
In his view, this point in particular is crucial. If you don’t set clear deadlines, you shouldn’t be surprised if negotiations drag on. Hamann was all the more disturbed by the latest revelations surrounding the poker game
When it was revealed on the Sky programme that FC Bayern had even withdrawn the contract offer in the meantime and Upamecano nevertheless signalled his willingness to extend shortly afterwards, Hamann was stunned. „That’s an indictment of the club, if that’s what happened. A club can’t show any greater weakness,“ he said clearly
From Hamann’s point of view, FC Bayern should have acted consistently after the player’s long hesitation. Instead of entering the market at eye level again, they should have made a new, less attractive offer in order to strengthen their own negotiating position
Upamecano’s contract expires next summer and, according to media reports, the Frenchman is set to sign a new contract with the German record champions this week until 2030.
