Ancelotti backs CBF plan to cut foreigners in Brasileirão, Flamengo vote against | OneFootball

The CBF has approved a cut to foreign-player slots in the Brasileirão, from nine to five by 2030. Flamengo voted against, while Ancelotti backs it.

"It does not seem to me that this measure will help Brazilian football, quite the opposite, it will make the league weaker, because players will continue leaving," Boto said, speaking to Coluna Do Fla.

"The best players will continue to leave for Europe very young, and without the possibility to retain those valuable players, clubs will have to play with lesser ones, which will lower the quality of the Brazilian league," he added.

Across the 40 clubs in Série A and Série B, only Flamengo, Bahia and Londrina opposed the move. The cap will drop to eight in 2027, seven in 2028, six in 2029 and five from 2030.

Flamengo list 11 foreigners, including Arrascaeta, Varela, De La Cruz, Viña, Rossi, Freitas, Plata, Valencia, Pulgar, Carrascal and Saúl. Jorginho is not counted, as he was born in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Ancelotti said he believes cutting foreign quotas is important to open opportunities for Brazilian talent and is positive for the league, adding that stepping down year by year is not a demerit.

Brazil face Australia Friday at 7:00 in their first friendly since the World Cup. Flamengo players Samuel Lino and Pedro will start on the bench.
