Andoni Iraola Addresses Alexis Mac Allister Contract Talk Amid Liverpool Uncertainty

Alexis Mac Allister has created a problem for Liverpool, and Andoni Iraola knows it. The midfielder’s public admission that he was “very sad” not to have been offered a new contract, along with his claim that he has “options to leave” this summer, has put the issue front and centre.

Iraola’s response was measured, which is what you would expect from a head coach who has barely had time to settle into the job. He did not escalate it, he did not indulge it, and he did not pretend it was irrelevant either.

Mac Allister contract issue put on hold

Speaking about the situation, Iraola said: “We all have responsibilities and contracts with a club. We haven’t been together for a lot of time but he is very important and has played a lot of minutes [to a] very high [standard]. We have time to talk about those contract situations.”

That is the sensible line. Mac Allister matters, Liverpool know it, and Iraola made sure to underline it. He was then asked whether he had spoken directly to the Argentina international about the contract issue. His answer was clear: “No. I try to help all my players. I hope I can improve my players so I can help them win games. Same with Alexis and everyone else. I’m very happy with Alexis and his performances, especially on Friday. I hope I can help him to improve. He’s a very good player.”

That is probably the correct priority. Managers coach, executives negotiate. Iraola has enough on his plate without being dragged into public contract theatre in early season.

Mac Allister started the campaign on the bench against Newcastle, but he has since started Liverpool’s next two matches and looked sharper in the 2-1 win over Ipswich. His display at Portman Road offered encouragement after a poor 2025/26 season by his standards. He recovered the ball well, kept things moving and looked more like the midfielder Liverpool need.

Liverpool midfield balance remains key

In practical terms, this matters because Liverpool still need structure in midfield. Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai can give the side control, energy and tempo, especially while there is no fully convincing natural number six established in the side. That places extra responsibility on the Argentine.

If he performs consistently, the contract conversation may become easier. If he does not, the noise around Manchester City and Chelsea will only grow. That is how these situations work.

For now, Iraola has done what he had to do. He backed the player, avoided drama and kept the focus on football. Liverpool would prefer this to be resolved quietly. Whether Mac Allister allows that to happen is another matter.
