André-Pierre Gignac was sent off for the first time in his career at 40 as Tigres beat Club León 2-1, the dismissal arriving in the final seconds on Saturday night after more than 800 professional games.
Former international referee Arturo Brizio Carter said there was no excuse for Gignac and considered the red card justice. He added referees had spared him dismissal countless times in the past.
Gignac came on in the 61st minute, was booked in the 79th, then received a second yellow for a foul in the 90+7.
He reacted angrily, moving his head to within centimetres of the match official. The French forward has not scored since 26 October.
Gignac is Tigres’ record scorer, with 221 goals in 427 matches, and has 36 caps and seven goals for France. Since moving to Mexico in 2015, officials have often been accused of indulging his protests. Carter previously dismissed Zinédine Zidane at the 1998 World Cup in France’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia.
