Inter Women simply refused to give in. With heart, pride and the determination to keep pushing until the very end, the Nerazzurre earned a hugely important point away to Austria Wien on Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 League Phase. It was another memorable European night in the Club’s first-ever Women’s Champions League away fixture, with Ivana Andrés scoring the equaliser with the final action of the match. Inter showed real resilience to stay in the contest after a difficult opening hour against a strong, well-organised side that pressed with intensity and made life difficult throughout. Uka had given the hosts a deserved first-half lead with a left-footed strike from distance, but Sassarini’s side once again showed their character and belief when it mattered most. The draw takes the Nerazzurre to four points after two matches. Their next Women’s Champions League fixture will be away to Lyon on Wednesday 28 October.
THE MATCH There was a lively atmosphere at the Franz-Horr Stadion in Vienna, with Inter’s first-ever Women’s Champions League away fixture coinciding with Austria Wien’s first home game in the competition. The hosts started aggressively, pressing high, playing at a fierce tempo and looking to break quickly whenever they won the ball back. Austria Wien threatened early through Pfanner, who won possession high up the pitch and drove towards the edge of the box before forcing Rúnarsdóttir into a comfortable save. It set the tone for much of the first half, with Inter looking to build from the back but struggling to play through the home side’s pressure. After Pötzl had fired over, Uka gave Austria Wien the lead in the 21st minute with a powerful left-footed strike from distance. The goal did little to disrupt the hosts’ rhythm, as Kenesei’s side continued to create problems with their pressing and intensity. Inter found little space to develop their play, while Bugeja and Cambiaghi both found themselves in promising positions without the right option arriving in the middle. At the other end, Rúnarsdóttir was called upon again, producing two excellent saves from Austria Wien corners to keep the Nerazzurre within touching distance.
Sassarini reshaped his side at the start of the second half, changing both forwards as Polli and Raphino replaced Bugeja and Cambiaghi, while Milinković came on for Kullberg and Magull took the place of Tomašević. Inter still struggled to carve out clear chances for an equaliser, with the final pass lacking whenever space opened up, while Austria Wien continued to play at a high intensity. As the hosts’ relentless pressing began to ease, however, the Nerazzurre created two huge opportunities to level. In the 72nd minute, Raphino won her duel and raced through on goal, only for Pal to rush off her line and block the finish. Magull was first to the rebound but could not find the target. Six minutes later, Raphino was involved again, bursting down the left before delivering an excellent ball into the middle for Glionna. Benedetta looked to take it past Pal, but the goalkeeper reacted sharply to nick the ball away. Those two chances shifted the momentum firmly in Inter’s favour. The Nerazzurre pushed higher up the pitch, grew in confidence and threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Just when it seemed time had run out, Inter won one final corner in the last of three added minutes. With nothing left to lose, even Rúnarsdóttir went forward. Their bravery was rewarded. After a frantic scramble inside the box, the ball fell to Ivana Andrés, who showed superb composure to bring it under control and finish into the net as the clock ticked into the 93rd minute. The Inter bench erupted, racing onto the pitch to embrace their captain, the symbol of a side that once again refused to stop fighting. The final whistle followed moments later, sealing a hard-earned and hugely valuable point at the end of a difficult but unforgettable night.
