Ange Postecoglou believed he would be afforded time to arrest Nottingham Forest’s slide and is currently pausing before his next move after his October dismissal.
“I think he (Postecoglou) is just taking a break right now,” said Steven Caulker, speaking on talkSPORT. “They went into Forest and there was the expectation as they walked into a club that was playing European football, and they were going to have time. But without being given that time, it didn't work out.”
The former Tottenham boss replaced Nuno Espirito Santo three games into the season but lasted only 39 days. His eight matches yielded no wins, with four straight defeats preceding his sacking, and he has been out of work since.
Nick Montgomery, one of Postecoglou’s assistants during that spell, is now with Chinese side BJ Guoan. Caulker added: “I think he's taking a breather and seeing what is next.”
Successor Sean Dyche has experienced mixed fortunes domestically and in Europe. Forest are three points above the drop and host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday. West Ham, in 18th, could move level with victory at Manchester United on Tuesday.
After Friday night’s 3-1 loss to Leeds United, Dyche said: “When we got here, we were two points in the relegation zone. Now, we are six points out of it. The work continues. I wasn’t getting carried away when we beat Liverpool 3-0 or Tottenham 3-0.”
