The Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup is still just under three weeks away, but FC Bayern’s goal is already clearly defined. Sporting Director Max Eberl made it clear during the team’s trip to Asia that the record champions are determined to win the first title of the new season.

FC Bayern is currently preparing for the new season with friendly matches in South Korea and Hong Kong. Upon returning from Asia, the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund will mark their first competitive match—and, at the same time, their first chance at a title.

For Max Eberl, the competition is of great importance. The sporting director made it clear in Jeju, South Korea, that FC Bayern by no means views the trophy as merely a way to improve their preparation.

Eberl: Every title counts at FC Bayern

“Every trophy is worth winning, and that’s why the Super Cup is important to us,” Eberl explained.

At the same time, the 52-year-old made it clear that the club’s management will not take any unnecessary risks when it comes to managing player workload. “Of course, we’re not going to push any player into this competition if there’s a risk of injury.”

Nevertheless, the strategy is clear: “But we’ll field our best team to win this trophy.”

Eberl also emphasized that this ambition is deeply ingrained in the record champions: “I learned that at FC Bayern; I learned it back in the youth system. Thirty years later, that hasn’t changed. If there’s a trophy to be won, then we want to win it.”



FC Bayern will face Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park on August 22. The Munich team heads into the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup as the reigning German champions and cup winners, while BVB enters as the runner-up.

With his clear statement about the Super Cup, Eberl once again underscores FC Bayern’s ambition: Even though the season is just beginning and some key players are still working on their return, the first title of the year should go to Munich as quickly as possible.
