Antoine Griezmann has said he will remain at Atletico Madrid until at least the end of the season, amid interest from Orlando City in MLS.
“I’m very happy here, I’m really enjoying it. What I do on the pitch speaks for itself. We’ll see, but the idea is to go all the way to the end and then everyone else can talk,” he told Movistar+.
It has long been expected he would head to the United States late in his career, and Orlando pushed to do a deal before MLS’s 26 March deadline, a timing that could be worth millions to him. Orlando are reportedly now in talks over a potential free transfer in the summer, and Griezmann has ruled out a mid-season exit.
He spoke after Atletico’s 5-2 win over Tottenham in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg. “That’s my dream, my goal, and hopefully we can achieve something great,” he said of the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
Early errors from Spurs, including two slips by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and one from Mick van de Ven, led to Atletico’s first three goals.
“Very well, we took advantage of some mistakes from them or the pitch, but we’re used to it. We need to improve on what we did in Barcelona so we don’t repeat it,” he said, referencing their 3-0 defeat in the Copa semi-final second leg.
“We wanted to put a lot of pressure on them, and that’s what we did. The mistakes came from our own pressure.”
Atletico host Getafe at the Metropolitano this weekend, then visit Spurs at the Tottenham Stadium next Wednesday.
