Arrascaeta has fractured his left wrist while on Uruguay duty in a friendly on Monday, extending his absence for Flamengo. According to Globo.com, it is his fifth injury picked up with the national team, with 118 days already missed that will rise after the FIFA window.

Across nearly four months sidelined by Uruguay-related injuries, he has missed 18 Flamengo matches, including Copa do Brasil semi-finals and late rounds of the Campeonato Brasileiro. Previous issues affected his left hamstring, right thigh, right adductor and right calf.

This is not his first fracture. In 2021 he played through a right arm injury after a collision with Salazar of Olimpia in the Libertadores quarter-finals, using a bandage and avoiding a Flamengo absence.

Surgery is required for the current left-hand break, so playing with protection is not an option. It is too early to set a recovery timeline, which will depend on the procedure and his progress, and there is a chance he could miss Estudiantes in the Libertadores semi-finals.

Uruguay beat South Korea 4-1, the first victory of Diego Forlán with the Celeste. Flamengo are due back on 8 October against Santos at Vila Belmiro in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
