Arsenal attacker Eberechi Eze is set to have a scan on his calf this week, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.

The Gunners forward missed out on the final of the League Cup on Sunday as Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The Emirates Stadium club will hope to have Eze back after the international break, but Delaney made a claim in his ‘Inside Football’ bi-weekly newsletter yesterday.

He says that sources close to the Arsenal player insist the knock is just a minor strain. However, club insiders have noted that a scan rarely accompanies a one-week lay-off.

Eze initially thought he had escaped injury against Bayer Leverkusen last week, only to have the discomfort flagged upon his return to training and during initial tests.

He raised concerns that he had suffered an injury, and while he was pictured on the grass in training on Saturday as Arsenal prepared for the next day, it was decided he would not be available for the game.

Eze has since withdrawn from international duty with England and will continue his recovery at the Gunners’ training ground.

Arsenal are back in action next month, and manager Arteta will be praying that Eze and other injured players are ready by then.

Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard have also pulled out of international duty, while Martin Odegaard is remaining in England to continue his recovery.

The Gunners take on Southampton at St Mary’s on April 4 in the FA Cup quarter-final before visiting Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

They could do with Eze and other injured stars for those crucial games as they look to finish the season with major silverware.
