Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord and former Manchester City winger Hayley Raso were on target for The CommBank Matildas as they eased into the last-eight.
It was Denmark who were on the front foot in the opening stages of the game. The Danes’ best chance of the first half came before the 10-minute mark, when Pernille Harder’s half-hearted shot forced Australia and West Ham United goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold into a comfortable save.
Foord opened the scoring for the hosts just before the half-hour mark. Mary Fowler found the Arsenal winger on the left, who strode into the box before slotting the ball through the legs of Danish keeper Lene Christensen.
Australia’s momentum continued into the second half and they found the net again through Raso in the 69th minute. Manchester City forward Fowler was again instrumental in the attacking move that led to the goal. A flowing move was finished by Raso with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
The home crowd were then treated to Sam Kerr’s first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. The Chelsea star almost opened her scoring account in the dying moments, but narrowly fired over the bar.
Australia’s reward for their victory over Denmark is a quarter-final tie against either France or Morocco on Saturday.
