Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will continue to assess Max Dowman’s development every six months after making it clear they wanted the youngster to remain part of the first-team set-up.

The Arsenal boss revealed the club did not seriously consider other possibilities for Dowman over the summer, with the priority instead to include him in pre-season and assess his progress from there.

“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were, at least, clear that we wanted to have him in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there,” Arteta said.

“We will evaluate every six months where we are, what is the best thing for him to do and from there make the right decisions.”

Arteta also refused to rule out a loan move for Dowman further down the line, although he believes the youngster is currently in the right environment at Arsenal.

“I don’t know, there have been many cases of that age that they’ve gone and they’ve been successful, some others not,” he said.

“My particular case, I think I was 17 when I went to Paris.

“Depending on the atmosphere that you find there, how much the coach believes in you, you go there just to be part of a squad, to play minutes, which country, it depends.

“But now he’s in a great place, he’s in a good place right now and let’s keep him here.”
