AS Monaco will face Fribourg and Brighton in the Conference League league phase after Friday’s draw in Monaco, their first campaign in the competition. The club are aiming for direct qualification for the last 16.

Filipe Luis’s side reached the stage by coming through the play-offs against Gornik Zabrze on Thursday 27 August. They will host Fribourg, last Europa League finalists in June against Aston Villa, in a final that finished 0-3.

They will also travel to Brighton in England, host Lincoln Red Imps and Nordsjaelland at the Louis-II, and visit Hearts of Midlothians in Britain and CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria.

It is a largely kind draw despite two tough assignments, Brighton, recent eighth in the Premier League, and Fribourg, surprise package of the last Europa League. Monaco must finish in the top eight to qualify directly for the last 16, or within the top 24 of 36 to earn a play-off.

Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro said: “We are going to have good matches in this group phase. Are we favourites every time? No, we must be careful and not get carried away. This competition is an opportunity to win a trophy, yes, but we must first be serious in the group phase and take the matches one after another,” he told Canal +.

On transfers, he added: “He can leave, but he might also stay. We do not know yet, there are a few days left. As for Lamine Camara, we really hope he will stay.”
