SD Eibar have loaned 22-year-old midfielder Ibai Asenjo to UD Logroñés, newly promoted to the Primera Federación. According to as.com, the Ermua-born player moves to gain senior minutes.
He featured in this summer’s pre-season, but competition from Iván Gil and Magunazelaia limited his prospects. He will now look to play at Las Gaunas. In the opposite direction, attacking midfielder Iker Otadui has joined Eibar B as a free agent after his spell with the Riojan side.
A product of Lezama from under-12 level, Asenjo was regarded as a leading prospect before serious setbacks. While still a youth player, he suffered two major knee injuries that effectively ended his Athletic career.
After two tough years of recovery, he managed 15 games for Basconia and two for Bilbao Athletic. Eibar then signed him permanently from Athletic on a deal including performance-related payments and preferential rights.
Since moving to Eibar, he has stayed fit and become important for Iñigo Perez with the reserve side in the Segunda Federación, making 49 appearances and scoring five goals across the last two seasons, including four in 25/26. He was named in senior matchday squads under San José but did not make his debut. Asenjo is Eibar’s second loanee to the third tier this summer, after 2004-born winger Endika Mateos joined Barakaldo.
