Assim Madibo has been banned for five matches by FIFA after his red card for a foul on Ismaël Koné during Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar at the World Cup.
FIFA announced on Wednesday that the punishment followed a tackle which seriously injured Koné’s left leg. The decision may be appealed to FIFA’s Appeal Committee.
Koné, formerly of Marseille, has undergone surgery, and Madibo visited him in hospital with Qatar’s sports minister to check on his condition.
Qatar then lost their final group match 1-3 to Bosnia and Herzegovina, a result that confirmed their elimination from the tournament.
After that game, coach Julen Lopetegui said he did not believe Madibo should have been sent off. He called the incident very unfortunate for Koné and noted the referee initially produced a yellow card.
