Aston Villa are poised to sell defender Sil Swinkels to Sheffield Wednesday, with a medical expected before the end of the week.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 22-year-old is close to a permanent move, and the deal is believed to include matching rights, requiring Villa to be notified and giving them the chance to rival any future bids.

A product of Vitesse Arnhem’s academy, Swinkels joined Villa in 2020 and has made two senior appearances, the most recent in a Carabao Cup win at Wycombe in 2024.

He spent last season on loan at Exeter and Chesterfield, making 24 appearances in all competitions for the latter during the second half of the campaign.

Swinkels has previous League One experience with Bristol Rovers and remains well regarded by Unai Emery. He has also attracted interest from EFL clubs and others on the continent.
