Aston Villa were one of the first clubs linked to Jaydee Canvot in the summer transfer window, and it looked like he would join them.
Unfortunately, the talented young defender joined Crystal Palace. The 19-year-old ‘colossus‘ would have been a terrific addition to the ranks, but it was not to be.
He explained his decision to choose another club ahead of the Villains.
Canvot said (via L’Equipe): “It was long (negotiations over exit) because there were several clubs interested.
“I had to choose the right club for me. Crystal Palace are growing year on year.
“Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me if I’m the record sale (of Toulouse) or not. I just wanted to go to a team where I felt good.
“I didn’t want to leave for the sake of leaving; otherwise, I would have stayed at Toulouse.”
Villa ultimately settled for Victor Lindelof on a free transfer. He has made just three substitute appearances.
The club could use a marquee defensive addition, with Tyrone Mings looking increasingly injury-prone.
Villa should consider a move for England Under-21 captain Charlie Cresswell.
He impressed as England defended their European U21 Championship crown and has been a rock at the back for Toulouse.
The 23-year-old is a gem waiting to be unearthed.
Cresswell has helped Toulouse keep two clean sheets in seven Ligue 1 games. He has won 63 percent of his aerial duels per game.
He also blocks on average of 1.9 shots and clears the ball 6.3 times per game.
Cresswell’s ability in the opposition’s box is also a massive weapon. He scored three goals last term and was on the end of several excellent opportunities.
The Englishman would be a terrific capture for the Villains.
