Aston Villa have been dealt a significant setback with Ross Barkley (31) ruled out for up to three months after sustaining a knee injury during Sunday’s win over Wolves, according to reports from Sky Sports. The midfielder, who has struggled to build rhythm since arriving at Villa Park due to recurring fitness problems, was introduced at half-time only to be withdrawn 13 minutes later, visibly discomforted.
Subsequent assessments have revealed damage more substantial than first hoped, leaving Unai Emery without a player he believes was edging towards a regular starting role. “Ruled out as well is Ross Barkley, his injury is more than we expected,” Emery confirmed. “I don’t know exactly, but maybe 8-10-12 weeks. Hopefully a little bit less. It’s a pity because we were now getting the performances with him.”
The timing is particularly frustrating for Villa, who had begun to lean more heavily on Barkley’s experience and ability to carry the ball in tight areas. His absence further stretches Emery’s midfield options during a period in which the club have been grinding out results but relying heavily on defensive discipline and moments of individual quality.
Villa will also travel to Brighton without Tyrone Mings, who remains sidelined with a hamstring issue. Emery expects the defender to miss “four weeks more.”
