Jonathan David is enjoying a revival at Atlético Madrid, the Canada striker on target in the 2-1 derby win over Real Madrid.
He struck the second after arriving to meet a driven Giuliano Simeone cross, his third Liga goal in three matches. He was replaced on 62 minutes to a warm ovation, which contrasted with the jeers for Julian Alvarez. According to L'ÉEquipe, David arrived in the final hours of the window on loan.
Diego Simeone celebrated on the touchline, then later said he was delighted for David and that the forward brings the competition Atlético need.
Last season at Juventus he was used as a lone striker, whereas in Madrid he is paired with another central forward, Kang-in Lee on Sunday.
He scored only seven times for Juve in all competitions, and is already close to half that tally with the Colchoneros. The 26-year-old also knows competition could intensify after Alvarez’s late upturn in the derby.
Even so, his early showings have impressed his new club. He scores and he defends, ticking every box of Cholismo.
