Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli could end up joining Atalanta before the end of the summer, while Ibe Hautekiet could move to the Italian capital.

Atalanta Keen to Sign Alessio Romagnoli

Earlier this week, Atalanta secured the services of Thomas Kristensen, a 24-year-old Danish defender who made a name for himself in Serie A during his time at Udinese. La Dea will sign the player on loan with an obligation to buy for circa €20 million.

But according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Kristensen’s move to Bergamo wouldn’t stop Romagnoli’s arrival. The 32-year-old remains on the club’s wishlist, as Maurizio Sarri would relish a reunion with his longtime Lazio lieutenant.

Romagnoli Finds Himself in Awkward Situation at Lazio

Lazio had agreed to sell the former AC Milan captain to Al-Sadd in June for €3 million, but the situation in Qatar prevented the club from making a transaction, so the deal collapsed for the second time in six months.

Romagnoli has since rejoined Gennaro Gattuso’s ranks, and his behavior remains exemplary. But as Il Corriere dello Sport notes, both parties still prefer to part ways to avoid further embarrassment. The defender’s relationship with Lazio president Claudio Lotito is at an all-time low, especially following the player’s farewell to the supporters, which was broadcast during a large protest against the club patron.

Lazio Want Ibe Hautekiet as Romagnoli Replacement

The Roman newspaper also identifies Hautekiet as Lazio’s main target to replace Romagnoli, as does Il Messaggero. The 24-year-old Belgian defender has a €5 million release clause in his contract, and Standard Liege are holding out for this figure, refusing to grant any discounts.

The Belgian club have the player under contract until June 2029, so they are in no rush to sell him, especially after collecting transfer funds earlier in the summer through other deals.
