Alessio Romagnoli looks set to remain at Lazio after his proposed switch to Al-Sadd fell through, with Atalanta interest likely to be rejected.
Sportal reports that the centre-back had been close to a three-year contract worth €6m a season in Qatar. He reported for pre-season under new head coach Gennaro Gattuso and has stayed with the squad.
He wore the captain’s armband in a friendly against Avellino, a gesture that may signal his intention to stay in Rome this season.
Gattuso previously worked with Romagnoli at Milan and is believed to rate him highly, a relationship that appears to be shaping the defender’s thinking.
Romagnoli is weighing his options, with his former Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri, now at Atalanta, reportedly keen to bring him to Bergamo. For now, remaining at Lazio seems the likeliest outcome.
The shift follows a freeze on Qatari clubs’ overseas transfers, which left Al-Sadd unable to complete the signing.
