Neither side were able to claim an advantage from the first leg at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, as Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca and Les Phoceens’ Chancel Mbemba scored in the opening 20 minutes in a 1-1 draw.

The hosts have not played since the first leg and so should be fully refreshed for the crucial second leg, as they look to reach the final of this competition for the first time since 2018.

La Dea, meanwhile, returned to winning ways at the weekend with a 2-1 victory at Serie A’s bottom side Salernitana.

Can Atalanta create history?

Atalanta are relative newcomers to the European scene, with this being just their ninth campaign in one of Europe’s current top intercontinental competitions.

La Dea had only once made the final-four stage of a European cup before this season’s Europa League – with this coming back in 1988 in the now defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup where they were beaten 4-2 over two legs by Belgian outfit KV Mechelen.

After avoiding defeat in the first leg, Atalanta will be confident that they can make home advantage count in order to reach their first European final.

La Dea have already taken major scalps in this competition this season, taking down Portuguese giants Sporting and 2019 Champions League winners Liverpool.

Atalanta have lost just once in this season’s Europa League and are currently on a five-game unbeaten run, so all signs point towards the club creating history and reaching the final in Dublin, where they will face either fellow Serie A side Roma or Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Atalanta vs Marseille team news

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has a selection headache in defence after former Marseille defender Sead Kolasinac picked up an injury in the first leg and remains unavailable.

He joins the likes of Emil Holm and Rafael Toloi in the treatment room, however Isak Hien should start in the backline after missing the battle at the Stade Velodrome through suspension. Jean-Louis Gasset also has a player back from suspension for his Marseille squad in the form of Samuel Gigot, but captain Valentin Rongier and Bamo Meite are yet to recover from respective knee and ankle injuries.

Leading goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should get the nod up top again, with Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr and Faris Moumbagna all pushing to be the Gabon star’s strike partner.
