Athletic’s substitutes Navarro and Berenguer injected urgency, with Guruzeta finally finding the net after earlier misses. Unai Simón had a busy night, beaten by a Rubén García free-kick but producing key saves.

Paredes was booked in the eighth minute for a light brush on Budimir, then struggled with balls in behind. Vivian, back from suspension, held his own. According to as.com, Rubén García’s centrally struck set piece made it 1-0, with Simón expecting a cross.

Simón denied Torró and Rubén García, and made a superb one-handed stop from Moncayola at close range. Iñaki Williams, closely tracked by Javi Galán, headed wide and clipped the bar before Herrera gathered, and Catela snuffed out a clear opening before he departed. Guruzeta saw one effort saved low by the post and toe-poked another wide.

Changes on minute 59 brought Rego, Navarro in place of Sancet, and Berenguer. Navarro threaded a pass through five defenders for Guruzeta to bury into the corner, his second in the league compared with three in the Champions League. Berenguer clashed with Catena on the byline, both cautioned, then drew a booking for Herrando.

Nico Williams offered little before the break but was livelier afterwards, almost beating Herrera after an assured first touch. Jauregizar looked rushed and shot over, while Galarreta was tightly watched.

Areso replaced Gorosabel on minute 68, jeered by El Sadar, and he cleared a very dangerous ball. In minute 89, Nico Serrano replaced Nico Williams and delivered a cut-back that Navarro could not convert in stoppage time after a deflection.
