Atlético Madrid: good news for Diego Simeone
Diego Simeone can count on the unwavering support of the board despite recent criticism over Atlético Madrid's inconsistent results. The club's president, Enrique Cerezo, has confirmed that the coach will remain at the helm next season. With speculation mounting over Diego Simeone's future—especially after a string of disappointing league performances—Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stepped in to silence the rumors. "Will Simeone leave at the end of the season? No, of course he will stay with us next season," declared the Madrid executive, reaffirming the board's trust in the Argentine manager.
At the helm since 2011, the former Atlético midfielder has become one of the most iconic figures in the club's history.
Since taking charge of the Madrid bench, Diego Simeone has completely transformed Atlético Madrid, turning them into perennial contenders for trophies in Spain and across Europe. Under his guidance, the club has captured major honors, including two La Liga titles (2014 and 2021), the Copa del Rey in 2013, the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, two Europa League crowns in 2012 and 2018, and two UEFA Super Cups in 2012 and 2018. Atlético also reached the Champions League final twice, in 2014 and 2016, both times falling to their city rivals, Real Madrid.
On an individual level, Diego Simeone has also received numerous accolades for his work, including La Liga’s Coach of the Year award, the Miguel Muñoz Trophy, and the IFFHS World’s Best Club Coach award in 2016.
Despite these achievements, criticism has grown in recent seasons. Many supporters argue that Atlético Madrid no longer competes consistently with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, often settling for third place in La Liga. This has fueled debate about whether Simeone’s cycle at the club is drawing to a close, despite his many successes.
On an individual level, Diego Simeone has also been recognized multiple times for his achievements, winning La Liga Coach of the Year, the Miguel Muñoz Trophy, and the IFFHS World’s Best Club Coach award in 2016.
Despite the criticism and increasing pressure regarding results, Atlético Madrid's board has made it clear they maintain full faith in the Argentine, confirming that the Simeone era is far from over.
