Barcelona are refusing to give up on Julian Alvarez despite failing to sign him this summer.
According to Spanish outlet El Chiringuito, Atletico Madrid president Gil Marin has promised to lower Alvarez’s release clause if he scores at least 20 goals this season.
Alvarez bagged exactly 20 goals last campaign. He hit the target on 29 occasions during his first season after joining from Manchester City.
Given his previous record, reaching this milestone doesn’t look difficult for the 26-year-old.
Alvarez’s future at Atletico was one of the biggest talking points of the summer. The striker publicly expressed his desire to join Barcelona.
Atletico refused to negotiate with their domestic rivals, and a transfer did not materialise.
Alvarez’s public desire to join Barcelona hasn’t gone down well with Atletico supporters. They made their feelings known by booing him during a 2-2 draw against Villarreal last month.
The Argentina international is yet to start a La Liga game this season, but he impressed in their Champions League opener at Liverpool last week.
Alvarez assisted Marcos Llorente’s goal and forced a good save from Alisson, although Atletico eventually lost following a comeback from Liverpool.
