Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez saga has intensified, with the forward missing two consecutive training sessions citing illness and his involvement at Sevilla on Saturday now in doubt. The Argentine remains ill at ease at the club, a situation affecting the group.
The club said in a statement that the board had unanimously backed the decision not to negotiate Álvarez’s transfer to Barcelona, that talks must be ethical and respectful between clubs, and that Barcelona had not met those standards. As a result, there had been and would be no negotiations, and it was convinced the player would understand and focus on helping the team as he has in his two seasons.
Tensions with sections of the support are stark. Álvarez was loudly jeered during the Villarreal match at the Metropolitano, with many still angered by his World Cup comments.
Despite the noise, Atlético have begun the league with one win and one draw.
They visit Sevilla on Saturday at 21:30 for their first away game of the campaign. Luis García Plaza’s side have opened with two wins and five goals.
If Álvarez is unavailable, it would be his second game missed this season.
