Habib Beye confirmed on Friday that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in the Marseille squad after a weekend sanction. The 36-year-old hopes to shine against Rennes, with his future possibly away from Provence.
According to L'Équipe, on Thursday 7 May he was heard chanting in the Commanderie corridors that they would beat Le Havre. OM duly won 1-0 on Sunday, but he was omitted from the trip after a prank involving a fire extinguisher used on Bob Tahri, a representative of the sporting department.
He told interim president Alban Juster and incoming Stéphane Richard that he had acted foolishly, and CCTV showed him as the ringleader. He took the blame, apologised, and the punishment did not extend beyond missing the Normandy journey.
Now back, affable and positive, he wants to end a draining season on a high, before a possible departure. Discussions with the new sporting hierarchy are due by early June.
On returning last July, choosing OM over a move to the Gulf, Aubameyang knew it would be a short cycle. He signed a two-year contract, compared with the three-year deal signed in July 2023, on around 350,000 euros gross per month, well below the salary of his first Marseille spell. He turns 37 next month.
