After reports surfaced on Monday afternoon that Sandro Wagner had been relieved of his duties as FC Augsburg coach, the Bundesliga club have now officially parted ways with the 38-year-old and his coaching staff.
The decision has been made following Augsburg's 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim on Saturday, which leaves the club in 14th place in the Bundesliga.
FC Augsburg’s director of development, Manuel Baum, will take over as head coach on an interim basis until the winter break.
“We would like to thank Sandro and his team for their work and the passion they brought to FCA,” said FC Augsburg CEO Michael Ströll.
“In discussions following the game against Hoffenheim, it became clear that the belief and conviction to turn things around with our current setup were no longer there. Every decision we make is based on what is best for FCA, and that is why we have reached this conclusion.”
Wagner, who took over from Jess Thorup last summer, commented:
“I approached the job at FCA with energy and real passion. We wanted to implement big changes together, but unfortunately we were unable to achieve what we had hoped for in the short time available. I want to thank everyone at the club for the trust and support I received here. I wish FCA nothing but the best for the future.”
