Autistic teen dubbed Sunderland Banksy creates SAFC art to rebuild confidence | OneFootball

A non-verbal autistic teenager, Jack, 19, has found a creative outlet in SAFC-themed spray paint art, rebuilding confidence and earning the nickname Sunderland Banksy.

According to Sunderland Echo, Jack’s challenges worsened at 14 when seizures began, including one at the Stadium of Light during a Black Cats fixture. Diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy, he struggled and his mother, Sara, says he felt as if life had been taken from him.

Guided by Durham Spray Paints owner Lewis Hobson, Jack turned to spray cans after a medication-related tremor made brushwork impossible. He has launched a Facebook page, Purple Brain Creations, to showcase his pieces.

His SAFC series features captain Granit Xhaka and Luke O’Nien, with works displayed at the Cambridge Pub, where regulars coined his moniker. Support from Steven and Rachel Usher, who run a Sunderland AFC Supporters’ Group, has been important.

His latest work captures Enzo Le Fee and a Spiderman-inspired celebration at Everton. Sara says familiar themes help him focus, and his consultant, Dr Steele, is pleased the painting provides structure that aids management of his condition.
