Leeds United began their second season back in the Premier League with a last-gasp 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, Anton Stach bending in a late free-kick. It capped a day when James Trafford impressed and former Leeds striker Chris Wood rued a miss.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Trafford strode out purposefully during the pitch inspection, while Nico Elvedi cut an imposing figure as he chatted with Tarik Muharemovic. Sean Longstaff and Ao Tanaka shared a laugh in the warm-up.
Early on, Daniel Farke raged at Ola Aina’s challenge on James Justin, with VAR intervention followed by a yellow card. Trafford then made a key first-half save and exuded calm, his distribution frequently seeking Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Wood was introduced midway through the second half and soon burst between Jaka Bijol and Muharemovic but lashed wide. Stach had been below par and Farke had considered withdrawing him, before the midfielder struck with two minutes left.
In deep stoppage time Elvedi readied himself for a debut, only for the final whistle to deny him. The away end erupted both for the goal and at full-time.
New signings Muharemovic, Wilson, Trafford and Elvedi took turns to salute the travelling support, then Farke followed. Arms and legs flailed amid a sea of yellow shirts.
Oliver Glasner then lightened his post-match press conference with a quip that he scarcely needed to hold one. Later, Leeds and Sunderland fans crossed on packed trains, the latter returning from a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich yet in good spirits about a forthcoming Europa League adventure.
