Wolves have unveiled a black third kit for the current season, which goes on sale on Friday morning, according to ExpressAndStar.com.
The strip complements a return to old gold for the home shirt and white for the away, with the trio said to reflect the club’s alchemy theme of turning base metals into gold.
Wolverhampton’s coat of arms is woven into the fabric, and the design nods to the club motto, Out of darkness cometh light, which has shaped this anniversary year’s celebrations.
Club historian Peter Crump said planning for the 150th anniversary began two years ago and the aim was for the two change shirts to be white and black, a preference he felt supporters shared.
He welcomed the finished design, praising its simplicity and tidy look, and the subtle background pattern that, like the home shirt, nods to Wolverhampton.
Crump called black a sensible choice for a third shirt. He noted Wolves first wore a black away strip in 2003, adding that black kits were once barred because the colour was reserved for officials, and that later versions have been well received.
The shirt will be available from 9am online and from 10am at the club store.
