Wolves head coach Cesar Peixoto says new goalkeeper Joao Virginia understands the expectation and pressure at Molineux after completing a £1.3m move from Sporting. He became the second keeper to join this morning, following John Ruddy’s free transfer.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 26-year-old arrives from Sporting CP having previously spent time with Arsenal and Reading. Peixoto views his knowledge of the Championship and English football as a benefit, and stresses he has the hunger and character to lift standards on and off the pitch.

The head coach added that experience of playing to win every week at his last club should ease Virginia’s adaptation, and that a decade in England will help him be ready to contribute. He also wants strong internal competition in every position to sharpen weekend performances.

Executive chairman Nathan Shi said the club’s patient approach to the window is bearing fruit after early marquee additions Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, and that Virginia fits the brief of players who improve the squad and commit to the club. He noted the goalkeeper is homegrown, knows the game here well, and should integrate smoothly.

Technical director Matt Jackson described Virginia as intelligent, professional and level-headed, and said he expects a natural transition without distraction. With the club starting well in two competitions, he believes the signing is a strong fit who can settle quickly.
