Botafogo have left Alexander Barboza out of Saturday’s 14th-round Brasileirão match against Remo, with the centre-back omitted from the squad.

According to Nosso Palestra, the 31-year-old is in advanced talks to join Palmeiras for around R$ 20 million.

Had he featured this weekend it would have been his 11th league appearance of the season. Competition rules allow a maximum of 12 games for one club before a player can move to another within the same tournament.

The omission was explained by the foreign-player quota in the Brasileirão, though Barboza has been a first-choice starter and a key figure for the Rio side.

Palmeiras and Botafogo have everything aligned for a transfer in the next window. Barboza was under contract until the end of 2026, but the Rio club have accepted a sale.

He was a pillar of the Botafogo team that won the 2024 Conmebol Libertadores and the 2024 Campeonato Brasileiro under Artur Jorge.

Should he arrive, Palmeiras would have Gustavo Gómez, Murilo, Bruno Fuchs and Benedetti as centre-back options. The club also hope to add Nino and will assess with the coaching staff whether to advance talks in the coming weeks.

Next for Palmeiras, Santos at home in the Brasileirão on 02/05 at 18:30, Brasília time.
