This season, FC Barcelona emerged as one of the most exciting and entertaining teams in Europe and Spain. Hansi Flick’s team regularly put on shows with their high emphasis on attacking football, and some of their matches in which they had to come from behind to win were highly entertaining for the spectators.
This approach to football allowed the Blaugranes to win a domestic treble, as they scooped up the La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup titles.
Meanwhile, a report from Diario AS shows how this attacking football also allowed them to win the race of having a greater TV audience than any other team in La Liga.
The report uses data gathered in a study by Barlovento Comunicacion, which shows that Barcelona had 1.5 million unique viewers per match on average, which is the highest for teams playing in the first division of Spanish football.
This number was 102,000 higher than the number for the second-placed Real Madrid, which had 1,468,000 unique viewers on average per match.
The other teams competing in La Liga are a significant way behind these two behemoths. The third-placed Sevilla is the only club to have more than 1 million unique viewers on average, which has been able to achieve this position by a combination of its social base and its matches being broadcast on a free-to-air TV.
Real Valladolid and Getafe are the two teams with the lowest number of unique viewers on average, and these were the only two sides unable to cross the 600,000 mark in this regard.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Betis, and Valencia are the clubs that had no matches on free-to-air TV, and this impacted their total unique viewership numbers quite a lot. Thus, the Blaugrana club stands 4th in this regard, with 9,259,000 total unique viewers, above the 5th-placed Real Madrid, with 9,237,000 total unique viewers.
This ranking on the basis of audience is important for the clubs as a third of the money shared by La Liga with its member clubs is on the basis of viewership during a season.
